Different Types Of Bone Cancer
Cancer that forms in the tissue part of a bone is called Bone Cancer. The root cause of bone cancer has not yet been discovered but researchers are working tirelessly to figure out the source. Many of those who have been diagnosed with cancer of the bone have a reported history of Paget’s disease and also previous doses or radiation or chemotherapy. Paget’s disease is a chronic bone disorder caused by an irregular breakdown of bone tissue.
There are many different types of cancer in the bone. After running a series of tests, some tumors turn out to be benign while others are discovered to be malignant. The good news is that the majority of all bone cancers do in fact turn out to be benign. Cancer of the bone can start out in the bone, causing it to be a primary cancer, or it can be caused by a cancer in a different part of the body that has spread into the bone. This is called secondary cancer.
The three different types of cancer in the bone are called Osteosarcoma, Chondrosarcoma and Ewing’s Sarcoma. The most common of cancer found in the bone is Osteosarcoma and it develops in new tissue of a growing bone. Young people, generally between the ages of 10-25 are diagnosed more often with this type of cancer. The knees, upper legs and upper arms are where bone cancer is most commonly found in the body. Cancer that begins inside the cartilage of a bone is called Chondrosarcoma and generally affects people in the 50-60 age bracket. The pelvis, upper legs and shoulders is where Chondrosarcoma is often found. Another form of cancer of the bone that affects a younger age group is Ewing’s Sarcoma. This cancer forms inside of immature nerve tissue inside of the marrow of a bone. Ewing’s Sarcoma is found in the pelvis, upper legs, ribs and arms.
If your bone cancer has metastasized, or spread, it can very likely spread to different parts of your body, such as your lungs, breasts or other organs. If the cancer has been spread into a different area of your body (like your lungs), the course of treatment will still be for bone cancer, not lung cancer or breast cancer, etc. Since the source of the cancer came from the bone in the primary form, treatment will be given as such.
