Signs And Symptoms Of Bone Cancer

Bone cancer is a very rare type of cancer to be diagnosed with. Typically children and young adults between the ages of ten and twenty years old are diagnosed with one of three different types of bone cancer. Osteosarcoma is a cancer than starts in the tissue of a maturing bone that is caused by some sort of error in the DNA growing process and is generally found in the knee, upper leg and pelvis of a person. Ewing’s Sarcoma is another bone cancer that effects the younger generation and begins in the bone marrow of a person. The final type of bone cancer is called Chondrosarcoma. This cancer is the only cancer that is not usually found in children or adolescence, rather in adults who are over the age of 50 years old. Males of Caucasian descent are the majority of diagnosed cancer patients. African-American’s and Asian’s are rarely diagnosed with bone cancer and women are of the minority in a diagnosis. There are certain symptoms of bone cancer that you should be aware of if you have concerns regarding the health of your body.

One of the most often complained about symptom regarding cancer of the bone is a direct, localized pain in your bone or joint. This pain generally starts out as a dull feeling, which will escalate over time (as the cancer tumors wrap around the bone) to become excruciatingly uncomfortable. Often times, if the tumor has grown to the outside of the bone, you will have an apparent lump that you can feel through your skin. Other symptoms include an unexplained fracture of the bone that you simply do not know how it happened. Bone cancer obviously makes the bone very weak and brittle and a fracture in the bone that cannot be explained away is a common symptom of bone cancer. You may find yourself extremely fatigued even after getting plenty of rest. Anemia is another common sign or symptom that could explain the fatigue you are feeling. If you have a dramatic weight loss that was unintended can also be another symptom. If you have any or all of these symptoms, a consultation with your physician should take place immediately for further testing.
